Kinetic energy is the energy possessed by an object that is moving. The kinetic energy can be calculated from the object's mass, M and the magnitude of its velocity, V, also known as its speed, using the following equation:

Since energy can be neither created nor destroyed, the velocities of objects involved in processes like collisions can be calculated based on the exchange of kinetic energy between objects, or the transition between kinetic energy and other types of energy.
