Real galaxies are classified according to their observed structure. One of the more commonly used classification schemes is known as the Hubble sequence, which divides galaxies into broad categories based on the presence or absence of spiral arms, among other features.

Universe Sandbox uses an adapted Hubble classification. Galaxy types include spiral galaxies, elliptical galaxies, and irregular galaxies. Spiral and elliptical galaxy types include several subtypes. The Galaxy Type property of a Galaxy determines the orbits of the Galaxy Nebula objects in the galaxy.
